The Ecomuseum-Flour Mill is a flour factory which dates back to the end of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. The space introduces the complex process of transforming wheat into flour through four themed areas: the evolution of the flour mill in the flour factory; the energy source; wheat, flour and bread; and the production process. It preserves the original machinery and mill canal, of medieval origin. This canal had operated the flour mill that was in the same location and, from 1905 onwards, it provided power to the turbine which generated the energy needed to operate the flour mill.
The premises of today’s Ecomuseum-Flour Mill of Castelló were formerly a flour factory and a mill. At the end of the 19th century, once it was no longer used as a mill, it was transformed into a flour factory. This image from 1995 shows the era of the “Harinera de Castelló de Ampurias, S.A.” flour factory, a photograph that is part of the collection from the Empordà weekly newspaper. The Ecomuseum-Flour Mill is currently part of the National Museum of Science and Technology network. Demonstrations can be seen there, showing the various processes involved for transforming wheat into flour in a fun and educational way. The photograph shows how the flour mill worked with two individuals working in the old era of the mill. The image is preserved in the Alt Empordà Regional Archive.
