The Carlina Tower is a strong 16th-century soldiers’ fort built by the Toledo regiment; its purpose was to fortify the town. During the 19th century, three civil wars ravaged the country as a result of a problem related to the succession to the throne of Spain. The First and, above all, the 3rd Carlist War had a major impact on the town, which had four defence towers at the edge of the town. Today, only one is preserved, as the others were destroyed in 1874 when Castelló suffered a very harsh attack that left a permanent mark on the memory of the people who lived there and which was called the Fire of Castelló; a bloody battle which went in favour of General Savalls’ Carlist troops.
