Inaugurated in 1974, the Dalí Theatre-Museum stands on the remains of the old municipal theatre of Figueres and it is considered the last great work by Salvador Dalí. It was all conceived and designed by the artist, in order to offer the visitor a real experience and immerse them in his captivating and unique world. The tour of the rooms allows visitors to capture the artist's first artistic experiences, surrealism, nuclear mysticism and his passion for science seen in the works carried out in his latter years. As Dalí himself explained: “It’s obvious that other worlds exist, that’s certain; but, as I’ve already said in many other occasions, these other worlds are inside ours, they reside on earth and are precisely at the centre of the dome of the Dalí Museum, which contains the new, unsuspected and hallucinatory world of Surrealism.”
The former municipal theatre of Figueres was built in the middle of the 19th century. This photograph by Josep Maria Cañellas from the Rubaudonadeu Collection shows us first hand what the building’s main façade was like. The image is from 1888, so the theatre had been in operation for a relatively short time. A novelty that revolutionised the future of the city, not only at that precise moment, but also later when it became the site of the Dalí Museum, one of the most important cultural centres in Catalonia and renowned all over the world. The Rubaudonadeu Collection is preserved in the Fages de Climent Library in Figueres.
