References were made to the 14th century Pont Vell (Old Bridge) from the end of the 13th century, although it was not completed until a few years later. Located in the old quarter of Sant Marc, which leads to the Camí Vell (old path) to Figueres, Pont Vell is a stone and tile construction, with seven arches with distinct shapes, heights and light and reinforced by triangular starling sections, which act as buttresses. Of the seven preserved arches, only one of the semicircular arches is built from stone. The rest are made of brick, as a result of later reforms. For centuries it was the only bridge over the Muga River which connected Castelló with the lands beyond the river until, at the end of the 19th century, in 1895 another bridge was opened for the new layout of the road from Figueres to Roses; this one with a metal structure, on voluminous stone pillars, which would be renamed the Pont Nou (New Bridge).
Pont Vell de set arcades,
bastit amb set anyades,
cada anyada, una arcada sobre el riu.
Anys d'abundor de Déu i anys de misèria,
marcats damunt l'artèria
del riu.
Pont Vell, serves records tristos i alegres;
han devingut tes pedres totes negres,
i ja sols un ramat, de tant en tant,
damunt del teu llom passa polsejant.
Mes tu encara rius amb indulgència
al pont nou, que ara et fa la competència,
Pont Vell!
Ets com una carcassa amb set costelles,
i al clar de les estrelles,
tens aire de castell!
