Sant Pius Quint is the name of a small oratory dedicated to St. Pius V, as well as the stream that passes below and the small beach it flows into. No information has been found on when the oratory was built. However, because the effigy has a halo, it is likely that the oratory was built after the canonisation of Pius V (1712). Pius V (the Dominican Antonio Ghislieri) was the pope who arranged a coalition of European Catholic states that defeated the Turks at the Battle of Lepanto (1571). The Christian victory meant the end of Turkish hegemony in the Mediterranean. It is not surprising, then, that the people of Cadaqués, after years of pirate attacks, were so devoted to the saint.
