It is most easterly located lighthouse on the Iberian Peninsula. The current building is an 87-metre-high lighthouse, beaten by northerly and easterly winds, which provides light and is a coastal reference point in one of the hardest areas to navigate along the Catalan coast. In 1385, there are records of a watchtower as a lookout for dangerous pirates. This tower was destroyed in around 1433, rebuilt in 1436 at the decision of the Catalan Government and reconstructed once again in 1568. It became operative on the night of 29 July 1853 and is the second oldest lighthouse in Catalonia. The difficulty of navigating these coasts led to its inclusion in the first lighthouse system programme designed by the Government of Isabella II. It has served as a reference point for poets and artists and the setting for several films.
Photograph by Josep Maria Cañellas, from the end of the 19th century, which belongs to the Rubaudonadeu Collection which is preserved in the Fages de Climent Library in Figueres. In the photo, we can see the lighthouse, shown as the main building with its original structure. Right next to it there is a small building, which would correspond to the personal lodgings of the various lighthouse keepers. The rock in the foreground providing a sensation of protection to the whole group of buildings stands out. A pole in front of the lighthouse was used to hang flags and other signs as a warning to sailors.
