The church of Vila-sacra has close ties to the church of Sant Pere de Rodes. The site is mentioned in 974 in a papal bull from Pope Benedict VI that officially confirmed the monastery’s properties in “Villae Saccari". The site is noted as "Vila-sacra" in a document from 1169. In 1240, the abbot of Sant Pere de Rodes bought the castle and Vila-sacra with its jurisdictions from Gilabert de Cruïlles. In 1308, Abbot Berenguer de Riumors was granted, through arbitration, the recognition of the absolute right to which he was entitled as abbot of Sant Pere de Rodes: the civil jurisdiction of Vila-sacra. The bell tower was added during the 17th and 18th centuries, and the choir and south-facing side chapel also correspond to a much later medieval period.
