Vilaüt lakes is part of the deepest basin of what was once Castelló lake, which covered a large area of the plain. The old lake gradually dried up, yet the deepest part of the lake basin is still more or less permanently flooded, providing a peaceful enclave for many of the species that can be found there throughout the year. The lake is at its most beautiful when the yellow lilies and buttercups bloom, at the same time of year the summer birds arrive to the area. The lake has a singular observatory: it was the first lookout built in Catalonia (1983) for watching several species of birds.
