The Santa Clara Covent, from the 17th - 18th centuries, currently owned by the City Council, is one of the first convents founded by the Order of “Poor Clares” in Catalonia, in 1260. Initially it was located outside the walls, in the place called the Santa Clara Plateau (today, the neighbourhood of Ca l’Anton), but it was so damaged due to the wars of the second half of the 17th century that the nuns decided to transfer it to within the town, at the end of that century. This is where the current building was constructed. It dates back to 1683 and consists of a church with a single nave and the convent, with four sections surrounding a porched courtyard used as a cloister, next to the church. There is a garden-allotment area at the back, which stretches back as far as the wall. It is currently houses the Cultural Centre of Castelló d’Empúries.
