The cloister is the only remnant of the former Augustinian monks’ convent, likely to have been founded in the second half of the 11th century. In 1578, it was occupied by the Dominican order (hence the current name), who remained there until 1835. The convent buildings, with the church, were demolished some years ago and only the cloister now remains, which has been proven to have been rebuilt taking advantage of the earlier Romanesque elements during a late period, which is difficult to date with precision. The sculpture work on the capitals covers various themes. For example, there are different types of capitals: some with geometric shapes; cubic capitals with geometric and phytomorphic designs, and another group is characterised for having pineapples on the scrolls. There are also capitals with rampant lions, some with lambs and others with mermaid-birds. As for the historical capitals, some contain biblical scenes such as the story of Adam and Eve and the depiction of paradise.
