The first castle was built by order of the Count of Roussillon in the 11th century. Several facts about the castle’s weapons were documented in the 12th and 13th centuries. In the early 13th century, the Count of Empúries enclosed the old castle within a large exterior wall, and in 1418 the Viscount of Peralada turned it into a large fortress, with three walled enclosures, which were defended until the fort was abandoned in the 16th century. The Count of Peralada, Tomás de Rocabertí, decided to rebuild the castle in 1893 and worked together with Master Builder, Alexandre Comalat to create a Romantic-style castle with clear modernist influences. Unfortunately, the Countess, the last of the Rocabertí family, died five days after the renovated castle was inaugurated. The Spanish Civil War, the castle’s use as an army hospital and barracks, and its abandonment in the 1960s all resulted in damage to the property. However, in recent years, the owner signed a project to repair and renovate the castle and grounds in the Vall de Requesens.
