Pedret and Marzà are two communities that belong to the same municipality and once belonged to Vilanova de la Muga. Marzà (Marciano) has been documented since 902 and its castle since the 13th century. The border castle located in this town was first documented in 1288, in a purchase of Amarsà (Marzà) Castle by Abbot Ramon from the Sant Pere de Roda monastery. It is later recorded in another document from 1402, mentioned by King Martin, Count of Empúries. A century later, in 1509, it is also mentioned in documents related to Ferran Ram's takeover of the Sant Pere de Rodes abbey and all its corresponding jurisdictions, until the Spanish confiscation, when all the possessions were auctioned.
