Building located at the highest point of Palau. The church of Sant Esteve de Palau Sardiaca was the palace’s former chapel and was attached to the north side of the palace. It is the oldest part of the complex and the only one that is well preserved. This pre-Romanesque church, which dates to the 8th-9th centuries, has a single nave, a transept, and a trapezoidal apse. The ground floor features a transept which does not extend beyond the walls of the nave. The apse has a barrel vault ceiling. Two arches support the church ceiling: the triumphal arch, at the entrance to the presbytery, and the main arch where the nave and transept meet. The church has three doors, one on the frontispiece, another on the north wall of the transept, and a third on the south wall of the nave. It has been privately owned since 1835.
