MARAM, the Fish Interpretation Centre, is an initiative of the Fishermen’s Guild of L’Escala with the aim of promoting the culture of fish, making known the life and work of the fisherman, promoting responsible fishing and transmitting values of respect for the environment and, in particular, for the marine environment. The permanent exhibition can be visited where we can find out about the port and the fish market, the different types of fishing that are practised (using drift nets, spider web nets and longline fishing), their fishing gear, the species of fish that are caught and the reason behind sustainable fishing, all with activities adapted to all audiences. The MARAM organises guided tours of the blue fish auction.
Photograph by Josep Esquirol which is found in the rich photographic collection belonging to the L’Escala Historical Archive. The image shows how some fishermen from L’Escala gather the fish caught during the day. Specifically, they are taking the anchovies out from the nets, just after reaching the beach. It’s interesting to see the number of people who formed part of the whole fishing process and more importantly, all the subsequent tasks in the treatment of the fish caught. MARAM shows the species of fish as well as explaining the techniques that have been used in the past and are still being used today in L’Escala.
