The creation of charitable societies was a social phenomenon in many towns in the Alt Empordà from the second half of the 19th century onwards. Over time, these societies grew into local meeting places and organised multiple leisure and cultural activities. Providing premises for these activities led to the construction of several peculiar buildings, with the architect Azemar one of the major contributors to this style.
