Bàscara has one of the most interesting medieval town centres in the area. It is arranged into a section of small streets surrounding the church. The centrality of this religious building is very obvious. In front of it there is a large area that we can imagine to be densely occupied in medieval times. The other identifying and fundamental element that explains part of the history of the town is Bàscara Castle. It is in a separate location to the church and it retains part of its walled enclosure. Some of the walls that protected Bàscara also extended along the town’s wall which faces the river Fluvià and today some of its parts are still visible.
Photograph from the collection of the Empordà weekly newspaper, kept in the Alt Empordà Regional Archive and in which the main façade of the Sant Iscle and Santa Victòria Church in Bàscara can be seen. It was taken in 1988 and remains of the original plastering could still be seen, along with the bell tower and its bell. The church is located in the heart of the town centre, surrounded by a walled enclosure, of which one of its most significant sections has recently been restored.
