The Catalonia-Empúries Archaeology Museum is one of the most important archaeological sites in Catalonia. The Greeks settled here in the early 6th century BC and the Romans later began the Romanisation of the peninsula (in the 2nd Century AD) from here too, doing so, not only for the strategic advantages offered by the gulf, but also for the indisputable beauty of this enclave. At the Empúries ruins you can visit the Greek city, the Roman city and the Archaeology Museum.

It was the former Santa Maria de Gràcia Monastery, a Servite monk convent. The photograph by Josep Esquirol from 1917 offers us an overview of what the site had been like: above all unknown and not worked on at all. It would be later that the great discoveries of the Greek city and the Roman city would be made. It therefore offers an interesting insight into the history that was yet to be discovered and learnt. Així va arribar el 19 de juliol. Jo acabava d’instal·lar-me a l’hotel del Gambo a la platja d’Empúries, amb el propòsit de passar-hi una part de l’estiu. A l’hotel, hi estiuejaven també la família Guarro, els Tizón, Manuel Rocamora, Lluís Font i potser altres persones que no recordo. A Cadaqués, el gran poeta Federico García Lorca passava temporada amb la família Dalí. En Bosch i Gimpera, catedràtic d’Història Antiga i rector de la Universitat de Barcelona, anava i venia sovint de Barcelona a les excavacions d’Empúries. Passava alguna estona a cal Gambo i a ell vaig confiar el primer missatge tranquil·litzador per als meus pares en esclatar el moviment subversiu i restar isolada a l’Escala. Tots els pensionistes del Gambo, així com milers i milers de pacífics ciutadans amants del mar i dels llocs bonics de la nostra Costa Brava, vivíem en plena mandra i folgança estiuenca amb el pensament egoistament allunyat de la política, quan ens va sorprendre el primer esclat de la guerra civil.
