The Santa Caterina Hospital is a Gothic building probably erected in the 14th or early 15th century with a rectangular-shaped floor plan, and its east wing is occupied by the chapel of Santa Caterina, also rectangular. On the main façade, which is now plastered, there is a Gothic portal and a two-light window, with trefoil arches and floral decoration on the imposts, which does not preserve its mullion. To the east there is another portal with a well-vaulted semicircular arch. There are other apertures from the Gothic period in the rest of the walls of the complex. The chapel is outstanding as it is one of the few examples in the church region with diaphragm arches and wooden trusses. This type of roof is more typical of civil architecture and seems to have been introduced from Languedoc in the 13th century and to have spread through the mendicant orders. Santa Caterina is now used as a social facility and the Ordis Hospital is a private home.
The Santa Caterina Hospital and Chapel in Ordis are two buildings which are located next to the parish church. In the photograph taken in 1989, the official act of the inauguration of the restoration of the chapel is shown. Particularly noteworthy are the diaphragm arches inside the Santa Caterina Chapel. A photograph that forms part of the Empordà weekly newspaper’s collection and that is preserved in the Alt Empordà Regional Archive. Recently, the chapel has been renovated once again and, after having been used as a theatre, it is now a social venue for the townsfolk.
