According to legend, the port chapel was built by Joan Tresserres in the 17th century, after a promise he made at high sea. Legend has it that, after surviving a very strong storm, he promised that wherever they could moor the ship they would build a chapel. That place turned out to be the port of Llançà and that is why the chapel was built there. Next to the Mare de Déu Port Church is the old cemetery of Llançà, where for many years the fragment of marble column sculpted by the Master of Cabestany is kept. It came from the façade of the Sant Pere de Rodes Church which is now the Museum of the Empordà in Figueres. On the other side is the port’s pine forest, which hosts the Chapel Gathering held at the beginning of September.
Photograph from the end of the 19th century showing the Santa Maria Chapel in the Port of Llançà. An interesting image in which you can see the white plaster work of the building. Next to it, there is an access door to the cemetery and the unfinished belfry with a bell. This photograph belongs to the rich Thomas Phototype Collection which is in the Llançà Municipal Archive.
