The church is mentioned in the Rationes decimarum of 1279 and 1280. In 1442, Bishop Bernat de Pau granted indulgences to repair the run-down church. The old parish of Pelacalç lost its independent status in the 17th century and the church joined the parish of Montiró in 1691. The church’s Mare de Déu de l'Om statue was believed to help teach children to speak and to help the mute talk again. According to a fable, a mute shepherdess found the statue inside the trunk of an elm tree. In 1686, a mute girl from Cabanes began to speak, a miracle attributed to the Virgin Mary.
