The town of Port de la Selva came about as a result of the decrease in the danger of piracy there, where there had previously only been a few huts (or shops) of fishermen from La Selva de Mar. The first stone of Santa Maria de les Neus Church was laid in 1744. One night in 1748, while the church was under construction, the residents of La Selva de Mar, who feared attempts of parish segregation from the port, destroyed the work that had been erected during the day. Although the works had not been completed, the Abbot of Sant Pere de Rodes consecrated the altar in 1763. In the years 1771 - 1772 the building must have been practically finished. The Port de la Selva achieved municipal independence in 1787, but the same cannot be said with regards its religious aspect; its church continued to be funded by the parish church of La Selva de Mar until 1926, when it was raised to the status of an independent parish.
