The oldest documented reference to the church is from the late 13th century. The parish church of Sant Sadurní de Montiró appears in the 14th-century diocesan nomenclature, however, only the apse from this Romanesque period has been preserved. The church was looted in 1640, and later burned by a regiment of Spanish soldiers. It seems that it was an act of retaliation against Josep de Margarit i de Biure, head of the Catalan militias and one of the most relentless combatants against Philip IV of Spain. The War of Separation broke out a few months after this attack. Following the destruction, a commission was set up in August 1640 to repair the church and the Santo Cristo chapel was built in 1683. The parish church of Santa Maria de l'Om in Pelacalç has been the suffragan diocese of the church of Sant Sadurní since 1691.
