The first documented reference dates back to 947. In the 16th century a watchtower was built to control the dangers of attacks from pirates coming from the sea. Today’s Sant Baldiri Church is the one built in the 18th century on the remains of an old medieval church, which is now in ruins. The activity of this hermitage is understood as that of a religious and economic centre for the numerous farmhouses distributed across the Cap de Creus mountains. It was continuously inhabited from the end of the 6th century to the end of the 19th century.
The photograph is an image taken in the 1950s and is part of the Josep Maria Bohigas Pujol Collection, preserved in the INSPAI. It shows the building in a very advanced stage of deterioration. Almost none of the basic elements such as the roof of the hermitage and the religious enclosure can be perceived any more. In addition, the rooms and outbuildings are also missing part of their structure. Thus, the recent actions in the consolidation and recovery of buildings have been key.
