The preserved remains of the castle of Hortal are made up of a tower and part of the walls that once surrounded it, which take an almost rectangular shape due to the irregularities of the terrain. The tower itself is circular, with a height of 7m and a diameter of 6m.
The first records that we have of this Castle date from the year 1099, and it was an important part of the border conflicts of the medieval viscounties of northern Catalonia and the Alt Empordà. First owned by the lords of Quermançó, the ownership was not only changed by force in instances, since originally the use of this fortification was carried out by the lords of Emporda who had to pay a tribute to be able to use it.
