Everything indicates that during the 15th century, the Vilarnadal Castle was owned by a branch of the Canadal family, Lords of the La Jonquera Castle. At the end of June 1677, there were clashes between the Spanish and French armies under General Noailles, in front of Vilarnadal Castle. These events precede what was known as the Battle of Espolla, which took place a few days later and was a great defeat for the troops of the Duke of Monteleon. This is the old castle in the area, later converted into a farmhouse. The central core of the building is rectangular, consisting of three U-shaped terraced sections, with one and two-sided tiled roofs distributed over a ground floor and two upper floors. It has two circular towers attached to the north-west and south-east corners of the building.
The Vilarnadal Castle is located in the municipality of Masarac. In this image of Montserrat Sagarra, the towers can still be observed, particularly a square tower and a round one with its crenels and loopholes. A noteworthy episode was a confrontation which took place in front of the fortification between the French and Spanish armies in the late 17th century. A fact that demonstrates its defensive utility and the solidity of its structure. Today, it has lost many of these attributes due to a marked change of uses, but it still retains some very significant elements. The Montserrat Sagarra Collection is preserved in the National Archive of Catalonia.
