The Sant Feliu de la Garriga Castle is, without a doubt, the most emblematic monumental complex in the area, and where the village of Viladamat originates. One of the cattle roads which led from the Empordà plain to the mountains ran through there. The church is documented to have been there since 1060. The building has maintained its Romanesque structure from the 11th century, with a very wide nave, topped by a semicircular apse decorated with double Lombard bands with lesenes. The castle is a large 17th-century building with a rectangular-shaped floor plan and a central courtyard and with a crenellated top and cylindrical angular sentries. The main façade, to the east, has a lowered arched portal and rectangular windows. In the central courtyard some vestiges that could correspond to the medieval work are preserved. It belonged to the Sant Feliu family, who were Lords there, and it has been documented since the 13th century.
Photograph from the Valentí Fargnoli Collection, which is deposited in the archives of the Museum of Archaeology of Catalonia in Girona. It is an image from the early 20th century in which you can see some of the fortified elements of Sant Feliu Castle such as the merlons and particularly the crenels along the existing sections of wall. Elements that have undergone a substantial transformation, such as the entrance to the complex and the castle can be seen.
