The Estanyols de Mas Margall cover an area of about 20 hectares. It is an old gravel pit restored as a natural space that contains two small ponds, a willow grove, communities of wet grasslands and reed beds, and a dry pasture area. The space owes its origin to the extraction of aggregates that took place there, taking advantage of the fact that the area was a river terrace of the Manol River, where, over the years, alluvial materials had been deposited and were used in the construction sector. Currently, the space is included in the inventory of wetlands, and the Alt Empordanesa Institution for the Study and Defense of Nature (IAEDEN), through an agreement with the owner, manages the area, studying and enhancing its natural values. At the same time, a series of actions have been carried out to achieve a more respectful use of this space by visitors. In this regard, a parking lot and a small picnic area have been set up, as well as two observation points with views of two of the ponds, built specifically for observing the birds that frequent the area without disturbing them. You can follow the direction indicated by the itinerary of the Estanyols del Mas Margall. After about 100 meters, take the path on your left. After another 300 meters, you will find a fork; from this point, you can reach both observation points with views of the ponds, on a round-trip route. On the right path, you will find the Tramuntana observation point and estanyol, approximately 100 meters away. On the left path, about 120 meters away, you will find the Ponent estanyol and observation point. We will return to the start of the itinerary via the same route.
