Dry stone constructions form part of a common heritage throughout the Mediterranean. The types of stone may be different, but the technique is the same. These buildings have great historical and cultural value and despite the fragile technique, they have endured through the centuries. These elements have given shape to the local landscape due to their intrinsic use in agriculture, livestock raising and commercial purposes, thus becoming an identifying element of great value for each region. Despite the great intangible value inherent in dry stone constructions and their historical, cultural, ecological or aesthetic worth, their fragility is patently clear. Given their lack of use and maintenance, such heritage is currently being abandoned, and at risk of fading away.
The region of Garriga d'Empordà is made up of the municipalities of Avinyonet de Puigventós, Biure, Llers, Pont de Molins and Vilanant. Here numerous dry stone constructions can be found.
