The creation of charitable societies was a social phenomenon in many towns in the Alt Empordà from the second half of the 19th century onwards. Over time, these societies grew into local meeting places and organised multiple leisure and cultural activities. Providing premises for these activities led to the construction of several peculiar buildings, with the architect Azemar one of the major contributors to this style. La Concordia was founded in Darnius in 1850 and construction on the premises that can be seen today began at the turn of the 20th century. This architecture can be included within the Catalan Art Nouveau movement, although the influence of the Catalan Noucentisme cultural movement is quite evident throughout the entire building.
