Mas Roqué Menhir Verified listing

This is a slate menhir that dates to between the Middle Neolithic and Copper Ages. According to GESEART, this menhir has been documented as Pedra Fita and Pedra Dreta since the early the 17th century (1615). In 1941, Joan Amades published a legend about the menhir which is still in use in the area, according to which the underground part of the tomb reaches the sea. Therefore, if you put your ear to its surface, you can feel the waves and determine if the sea is calm or rough. No type of archaeological excavation has ever been conducted, nor have any remains of objects or signs of any related prehistoric structure been found in the immediate vicinity of the menhir. An iron cross, like those placed on megalithic monuments to Christianise them during the 16th and 17th centuries, was likely mounted to the menhir at some point.
