The creation of charitable societies was a social phenomenon in many towns in the Alt Empordà from the second half of the 19th century onwards. Over time, their facilities became local meeting places and organised multiple leisure and cultural activities. The Unió Maçanenca (Maçanet Union) was founded during the second half of the 19th century and Josep Azemar was responsible for designing the building at the beginning of the 20th century. It is a ground floor building with a double-height ceiling and one upper floor. The large rectangular hall on the ground floor has a single nave and also has an interior balcony that runs around its perimeter, with exception of the back wall. Its large dimensions allow it to develop leisure and social activities with an open and public atmosphere.
Photograph from 1908 showing the interior of the Maçanenca Union from the beginning of the 20th century. This is an image that forms part of the historical photographic collection which belongs to the Maçanet de Cabrenys Town Hall. In comparison with today, the main room of the premises maintains the upper section and the railing that surrounds it. Similarly, the spiral-shaped side stairs also remain and allow access to the upper floor. The site’s popularity and this social space also continue to be popular in the town.
