Due to the characteristics of this ruined tower-castle (the diaphragm arches, the interior rooms and the appearance of the high arches and the machicolation), probably dating back to the late Middle Ages, from the 12th or 13th century. It is a traditional rustic construction that takes advantage of the remains of a much older large tower or guard, which, although there is no specific historical information, some hypotheses can be suggested: a Moorish guard mentioned in the 10th century; a tower also documented in the 10th century in the valley of Colera, a “tower” included in the fief of Dalmau Berenguer about the town of Colera; the Moorish tower mentioned in the act of consecration of Sant Quirc de Colera (935); and the reference to fortresses and towers made by the Abbot of Sant Quirc in an agreement signed in 1223. All these references could relate to the castle.
Image from the archive from the Museum of Archaeology of Catalonia in Girona. We are presented with a panoramic photograph showing the ruins of the Molinàs Castle. We don’t know who the photographer was and it seems to have been taken in the 1970s. The side walls and part of a castle’s tower can be seen. We can also make out a pair of beams that show part of its interior layout with a second floor.
