Santa Maria Church is located at the highest point of the old part of the town. Built on the site of the old church, which had been burnt in the pirate raids in 1444 and 1548, it is a late Gothic building which started to be constructed in the mid-16th century and was completed in the 18th century, paid for by “fish taxes” imposed on the fishermen having to fish at night and on national holidays. Inside we find a prodigious baroque wooden altarpiece designed by Jacint Morató and Pau Costa, made in 1725 and gilded in 1788. Also noteworthy are the seven small baroque altarpieces of the other chapels, the stone throne, the organ, the two wooden pews for the town’s consuls and a small Benedictine basin with the year 1705 inscribed on it. The façade is crowned by a square-based bell tower with an octagonal upper section, painted white like the majority of the houses in the town.
The Santa Maria Church in Cadaqués is one of the most outstanding and imposing buildings in the town. From the view portrayed in this watercolour, it particularly stands out surrounded by the typical, white houses, which the town was already known for. The angle from which the painting was done is interesting, as it is not from the usual viewpoint. This painting by Ramon Reig specifically gives prominence to the religious building in comparison to the other constructions. The bell tower bears witness as a guardian of the village and its people. This watercolour is part of the collection of the Empordà Museum in Figueres.
