A castle that conserves a church and a rectangular structure annexed to it. The complex is enclosed by a set of walls on the north and east side, while ithe southern part is protected by a natural defence. Within the walls the enclosed area covers about 1,800 m2. It is a Romanesque church and the other buildings are from the 13th century. A tower or rectangular-shaped construction and the walls with seven alternating rectangular and semicircular-shaped turrets on top of the walls stand out. The whole enclosure is walled and even the entrance adapts to the rugged terrain. There is a cistern outside the enclosure. It is first documented in 904. In 974, Count Gausfred de Rosselló and Empúries assigned Verdera Castle to the Sant Pere de Rodes Monastery. In 1283 Count Ponç Hug from Empordà ordered the construction of a castle where the old building had formerly stood. The Verdera Castle was controlled by the Counts of Empúries, with numerous disputes with Sant Pere Abbey.
