Located in the centre, it is the heart of the city and a reference point for important events in Figueres. La Rambla is a wide promenade with a rectangular-shaped floor plan that allows the natural slope to be removed from the central promenade, which ends at the bottom with some steps and the Narcís Monturiol monument. The central promenade is bordered with banana trees, flower beds and benches. The ground is paved and the street lighting is provided by vintage-style lamps. An architectural ensemble representative of the period of splendour of the 19th-century Figueres bourgeoisie. It was built at the beginning of the 19th century by the military engineer Antoni Lasauca, when covering the Galligans stream. By the end of the century, it was used as a public promenade and trees were planted along it. From 1917 - 1918, the architect Ricard Giralt Casadesús designed a new urbanisation and reformed it. Between 2002 - 2003 it was renovated in accordance with a project designed by Carles Teixidor.
Anonymous watercolor, the date of which is unknown. It is in the collection of the Empordà Museum and is believed to belong to a fast painting competition. It shows the famous Rambla de Figueres, specifically, its beginning at the junction with Girona street. At the end, you can see the bell tower of the church of Sant Pere, and you can also see the monument dedicated to Narcís Monturiol. It seems that the work was done with an abundant amount of paint, which conditioned the outlines.
Rambla sensitiva i tendra
Rambla nua, Rambla lassa:
l'amant que t'estreny tan fort
no pot robar-te la gràcia.
Li dónes tot i res perds
en l'amorosa batalla:
les carícies del vent
et fan més neta i més blanca.
Ni un núvol t'enterboleix
la dolçor de la mirada,
ni un mal pensament t'emboira
la lluïssor de la cara.
Duus un mantell blau marí
sobre les gràcils espatlles
i una flaire d'aire i bosc
endormiscada a la falda.
La Rambla el coneix bé prou
aquest bell amic de França,
el que arriba de molt lluny,
canta, estima, pren i passa!
