The town originally belonged to the Sant Martí de les Escaules Monastery and, later, to that of Sant Pere de Rodes. In 1123 it was given in fief to the Count of Empúries. During the 14th century the Bishops of Girona were Lords. Between 1321 and the beginning of the 14th century the castle was owned by the Vilamarí family, Barons of Boadella. In 1485 Bernat de Vilamarí, privateer and Admiral of the King of Aragon’s Navy, had the castle reformed and turned it into a Gothic castle-palace. On the main portal we find an inscription describing these details. Dissatisfied with the lord, the peasants decided to leave after 1486. The castle went on to pass into the hands of families such as the Almogàvers, the Albanells and, later, other bourgeoisie families from Barcelona and Perpignan; and in 1785 to the Baron of Palau-surroca and Calabuig. During the 18th century the Marcè de Can Felip family ran the castle.
The Castle-Palace of Boadella has undergone a series of reforms that have altered much of the original structure. This photo taken by David Serra in 2000 and which forms part of the collections of the Alt Empordà Regional Archive, shows one of the mullioned windows that exists throughout the building, made of Girona stone and with an ornate capital. Some of the vestiges that still give character to the Castle-Palace of Boadella and that enable us to appreciate part of its glorious past.
