Palau-surroca Castle was built around the ancient church of Sant Llorenç, which is today part of the castle. The church structure has been dated to an earlier period, suggesting that it was once an isolated building and the castle later grew around it. The church was likely built during the Romanesque period. A series of 14th-century documents describe the castle chapel as extremely old. According to Joan Badia, it can be dated to the 10th century. It was fortified with walls and towers around the 13th century, when Berenguer Palau was lord of the castle. Documents refer to an assault by French Republicans in 1794, who looted and set fire to the castle. It was occupied by the Carlists in 1855. It was later used as a farmhouse and is now used as a second home.
