The church of Palau was built between 1022 and 1070, during the period between the consecration of the Sant Pere de Rodes monastery and the first churches in Empordà. The church has been renovated and restored over the centuries. Major renovations include the ones in the early 16th century, which addressed the weak internal structure of the church and the population growth in Palau-saverdera. Like most religious buildings, the church’s statues and other objects of worship were burned during the Spanish Civil War. The bells were also melted down to make ammunition. Thanks to a donation of Mr. Lorda, the bells were restored in May 1962. The church was renovated by the Girona Provincial Council in 1981.
