These are the preserved remains of the old Escaules Castle. An almost trapezoid-shaped enclosure, consisting of a tower and the walls that surrounded it. A work carried out in the 14th and 15th centuries possibly built on an earlier construction. A castle in Escaules is documented in 1123, and would occupy the same location as the remains of today’s castle. It was called the “bastion” of Llers Castle. Both castles were owned by the viscounts of Rocabertí of Peralada. It was a network of castles that guarded the border between the counties of Besalú and Empúries. From the 16th century onwards, the castle is no longer recorded in any documents, so it is believed that it was abandoned during this period.
