This tower was part of the Barcelona to La Jonquera branch of the main Madrid to Valencia line of stations that came into operation in 1850. Optical telegraphy is a system that is based on a series of optical signals made by an operator on high ground, such as a tower or bell tower, which another operator sees and repeats, quickly transmitting a message from one point to another along the line. The construction of optical telegraphy lines in Spain began in 1844, when electric telegraphy was already being used in other countries. In 1853, the first line of electric telegraphy was built between Madrid and Irún, and in 1862 the abandonment of military towers was made official and the short history of optical telegraphy in Catalonia came to an end.
