The church of the old canonry of Santa Maria del Roure, with its roof and a large part of the sunken walls, was a single nave, with a Gothic polygonal chevet. In the frontispiece there is a portal with a large voussoir semicircular arch. Above it is a two-light window opening with pointed arches. On the south wall of the nave there is a semicircular portal, with the opening having been walled in. The apse has a polygonal floor plan with five faces. Inside the church there are two diaphragm arches. The downfall of the old monastery and the Roure Sanctuary began due to the battle that was fought there during the War of the Convention on 20 November 1794, with a French victory. The sanctuary had been abandoned in 1793.
The Mare de Déu del Roure Sanctuary is located in a special place in the Empordà area. In this photograph from the collection of the Empordà weekly newspaper, the old Augustinian Monastery appears completely in ruins. An image from the 1980s that gives an idea of the state of deterioration of the monumental complex. Only a few walls remained and the vegetation had already taken over. Despite this, the sanctuary is currently undergoing a process of major renovation and rehabilitation. The photographic collection from the Empordà weekly newspaper is preserved in the Alt Empordà Regional Archive.
