The “Sancti Andreae” is mentioned in a document preserved from 817. According to the inscriptions on the façade, it must have been a Romanesque church; the current one was built on this site between 1684 and 1765. It took 12 years to build the high bell tower (it took between 28 and 30 days just to make each of the stones at the base of the pilasters). It became a barracks during the War of the Convention (1793-1795). The remains of a section of wall of an old castle with several crenels are visible from the outside, which was reused to build the church.
Image of the main façade of the Sant Andreu Church in Borrassà. The beautifully decorated front door resulting from the church’s great reform which took place in the late 17th century is shown. It has been documented that the stone used came from the nearby quarries of Avinyonet de Puigventós. The image was taken by Josep Maria Cañellas in 1888 and is in the Rubaudonadeu Collection preserved in the Fages de Climent Library in Figueres. It seems that the work on the façade took place during mid-18th century, so this magnificent portrait was taken about one hundred years later.
