The Santa Maria de Panissars monastery was built during the rule of Bernat Tallaferro in the late 10th century. In 1097, it passed into the hands of the Santa Maria de Ripoll monastery, which founded an institution that provided hospital services. The monastery and church were abandoned by the late 17th century and many of their stones were used to build Bellaguarda Castle. The ruins of the Santa Maria de Panissars monastery are along the same border on the Coll de Panissars. The only structures left standing are a few walls and the church apse. The apse, with a semi-circular layout, still has a quarter-sphere vault. It retains part of the pillars of the triumphal arch and a window. There are remnants of white, red, and yellow paint in the apse. There are metre-high remains of a wall around the church, some of which feature rows of opus spicatum.
