The old church of Sant Pere Pescador was Romanesque (from the 12th-13th centuries) and it occupied the same location as today’s church, which was built during the 18th century. Remains of this original church are still preserved in the foundations of the north side of the one standing today. The licence to build the new church was granted on 20 November 1682 and the works lasted for 7 years and cost 7,200 Barcelona pounds. Later, in around 1823, it was restored. During the Civil War years (1936-1939), like many others, the church was looted and burnt, and the entire parish archive, religious ornaments, furniture, the organ and its three baroque altarpieces were destroyed. Similarly, the bell tower was destroyed and the bells were used to be converted into materials for the war. It was restored again between 1989 and 1992.
This photograph from the Rubaudonadeu Collection preserved in the Fages de Climent Library in Figueres, shows a general view of the town of Sant Pere Pescador. Two elements stand out above the rest. One is the Caramany tower and to its right the parish church. Although the image is blurred, part of the church’s façade can be perceived and its imposing bell tower stands out. The view from the end of the 19th century taken by the photographer Josep Maria Cañellas, provides us with a fairly accurate idea of what the Sant Pere Church was like as well as the important space it occupied within the whole of the old town. A superiority which, without a doubt, it has lost in recent years with the multiplication of new constructions that have been relegating it, and it having less importance in this regard.
